Union Gospel Mission
Union St. Gospel Mission has been providing dental care to homeless populations during business hours. I has not been until recently that a partnership has been started between UWSOD and UGM to allow students to participate after hours.
Rising 2nd years will have the opportunity to help with set-up and clean-up, taking radiographs, sterilization, and assisting 4th years. 3rd years will have the opportunity to help with all of these activities in addition to administering local anesthetic. We are trying to coordinate some prophy patients for the 3rd years as well. 4th years will be performing restorative treatment (mainly composite and amalgam fillings) and oral surgery. |
Husky SmilesHusky Smiles educates dental students and offers them additional service and clinical training. Service activities focus on providing oral screenings, fluoride treatments, and oral hygiene education to children and there families. We provide referrals to the Center for Pediatric Dentistry and other dental resources in the community.
The Husky Smiles Mission: 1. Improve the oral health of children and their families by providing dental education and primary preventative care. 2. Educate future dentists about their community and the community's access to dental care. 3. Provide additional research and educational opportunities to students who show a special interest in dental public health issues. |
LongviewThe University of Washington Community Dental Clinic in Longview provides free dental services every quarter. Started in 1999, this clinic is a partnership between the UW dental school, Kaiser Permanente, FISH and the local Community Health Partners and serves Medicaid-eligible children and their parents. Students treat a number of tooth problems for low-income children and adults. Around 50 patients are scheduled to be seen on any given trip.

Teeth and ToesDental students work alongside Medical and Nursing students to provide health care to homeless populations around Seattle. This is a great opportunity for interdisciplinary interaction while providing care with the whole body in mind from head to toe. Sites include Roots teen homeless shelter, DESC, Mary’s Place and Hammond house, with more sites in the works. 1st and 2nd year dental students provide OHI, and at some sites, fluoride varnish, while 3rd and 4th years provide restorative and OS.

45th St. ClinicStarted by our very own Dr. Donald Chi, this clinic provides free dental care for homeless youth up to 25 years of age. Clients are seen in the neighborcare clinic in Wallingford. This is a great opportunity for 1st and 2nd years to gain experience assisting and providing OHI, and 3rd and 4th years to perform both basic procedures as well as OS. Not only do students gain technical experience, but they also are able to gain a better understanding for a population so in need of oral health care.

Casa LatinaAs part of the Taking Oral Hygiene Awareness to Underserved America Grant (TOHAA), we provide oral health education, screenings, and referrals.
We will be working alongside medical students who provide health screenings and referrals as well. This is a great opportunity to serve the community and learn more about systemic health issues affecting the underserved in Seattle. |
Canine ConnectThis program aims to provide a more streamlined interview experience and application process for prospective dental students interviewing at UWSOD. The main feature of our program assigns current student volunteers, or “GUIDE DOGS,” to serve as hosts for incoming dental students who might need a ride from the airport or a place to stay before their interview day. Guide Dogs will also have the opportunity to bring the prospective dental student on rotations and lectures after their interview process. This unique volunteer experience is an incredible opportunity for us to separate ourselves from the norm and establish a more hospitable, informative first impression for our future dental students…not to mention save our interviewees lots of money and many logistical headaches.
